AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) ist ein Kompressionsformat für High-Definition-Aufnahmen. Dabei handelt es sich um einen effizienten Encoder und Decoder, kurz Codec, basierend auf der Spezifikation MPEG-4 AVC (H.264). Dieser Standard bietet eine weitaus bessere Bildqualität, als sie vom bisherigen MPEG-2-Verfahren (wie es für HDV verwendet wird) her bekannt ist. Außerdem ist das Kompressionsverfahren von AVCHD bereits für künftige Anwendungen ausgelegt.
